Deputy Ministry: Devolution of environmental autonomy still underdiscussion

KUCHING, Jan 18: Matters involving Sarawak environmental autonomy is still under discussion with Federal government, says DeputyMinister Of Urban Planning, Land Administration and Environment Datuk Len Talif Salleh.

He said the administration part has been finalised but there are some legal matters that need to be sort out.

“There are a lot of layers and levels of authorities that you need to look at because it is not only involved transfer of power, but at thesame time, the budget has to be discussed as well.

“It is a dynamic process. Some of it has been achieved but there are few other things that we need to sort out before we really finalisedit,” he told reporters after officiating the 7th Natural Resources Environment Board (NREB) and Sabah’s Environmental ProtectionDepartment (EPD) Dialogue Session held at local hotel here today.

Asked when the process was expected to be completed, Len Talif said there is no timeline set because the process involves complexissues especially the legal aspect.

“Although environmental matters will be under State jurisdiction, there are still certain matters that fall under Federal governmentresponsibility, such as financing,” he said. – DayakDaily
