A Day Out for PALS Member of SK Bako

KUCHING:  A total of 19 PALS Club members of SK Bako participated in an environmental education and awareness tour treat on 24th January 2014.  The students accompanied by two teachers and two Parents-Teachers Association  representatives visited the Batu Kitang Water Treatment Plant  and Tun Abdul Razak Museum.

This half day tour was organised by NREB with the support from State Education Department, SK Bako, Kuching Water Board and Petronas Sarawak.

The visit to the water treatment plant aimed at mainly enhancing participant's awareness on the need to protect the rivers as the source of our water supply . The visit also helped participants to understand the water pollutants in our river and water treatment processes.

During the visit, the participant were taken on a tour around the treatment ponds and were also given a chance to look at the chemicals used to process the water.

After that, the group proceeded to the Tun Abdul Razak Museum for another study tour. They were taken to the Petrosains Dinotrack exhibition and were guided through a series of educational and informative demonstrations and activities before heading back to their school. The activities helped participants to better understand on the needs to manage  non-renewable resources properly.

SK Bako was selected to undergo the PALS Club Adoption School Programme by NREB from October 2013 until April 2015 as part of the Kampung Bako Solid Waste Management Project  initiatives. The aim of the project is to facilitate a better solid waste management  for communities in this village through the introduction of waste segregation and recycling activities.  

Besides waste management, participants of this adoption programme are also exposed to the topics related to mangrove conservation as the village are surrounded by lush mangrove area.
